‘RUN POLIO’

Polio has been one of the oldest of scourges of mankind. History has ample evidence of the mass destruction caused by this totally preventable disease. A simple administration of a few drops of the vaccine could save your child from a life long, irreversible paralysis.

‘RUN POLIO’ is an attempt to reduce the incidence of this particular disease by timely, prophylactic vaccination.

And as an initiation to the same we keep :

The 1st Of Every Month As 'Run Polio Day'

for the administration of polio vaccines at Mother and Child Medical Services between 8:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M.

As a concerned parent many questions would emerge?

What is ‘Polio’ and why a need to prevent it?

Polio belongs to a group of enteroviruses having a predilection for the Central Nervous System and thereby causing extensive damage to the brain stem and the spinal cord. The incubation period is usually between 7-14 days. The disease manifesting with fever and then proceeding onto paralysis (which may become irreversible) as the disease progresses. Other systems including urinary bladder, respiratory muscles and the perception of sensations may also be affected.

As per the need for prevention; the results of an infection very well justify the need for a timely prevention.

Why the need for a vaccination?

A vaccination if administered properly and timely could save your child from acquiring polio. The ‘Sabin’s : live attenuated vaccine ‘ is being used, which is known to have an efficacy close to 100%.

Why administer the vaccination on a particular day only?

We come to the concept of ‘HERD IMMUNITY’. In a population it is seen that if more people are vaccinated at the same time then even those with a weaker immunity or the ones not properly immunized are protected as the virus is unable get a hold due to the resistance offered by the existing immunized persons.

Should I come if my child has already been immunized?

The concept of herd immunity is that the entire segment of the population should be immunized at the same time irrespective of their immunization status. Over vaccination is not known to cause any harm thus it is still advisable to come.

How safe is the vaccine?

The vaccine is a totally safe product recommended by the World Health Organization as well as our own government. This is the same vaccine used all over the world for polio immunizations. It is given by mouth so the problems of a vaccine given by injection are absent.

Till what age can the vaccine be administered?

According to the medical knowledge and the currently prescribed schedules all children below the age of about five years should be vaccinated.

So run for ‘RUN POLIO’ and ensure that your child runs the rest of his life!
